Leave your hotel at dawn and drive to the park gate, where the best light and the best chances of lions and rhinos are in the early hours. Spend the morning on a game drive across the grassland, pausing at the dams for hippos and birds, and return to the city after lunch.

Pack light, neutral colours for game drives, a warm fleece for early mornings, a sun hat, good sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars are provided in the vehicle, but bring your own if you are a keen birder or photographer.
