Gorillas and volcanoes in Africa's wildest heart

Overview

We are not currently offering travel to eastern DR Congo. At the time of writing, Goma and Bukavu are under the control of armed groups, their airports are not operating commercial flights, Virunga National Park has closed its gorilla and Nyiragongo treks, and government travel advice, including the UK Foreign Office, is against all travel to North and South Kivu. An Ebola outbreak across several provinces of the country, declared this year, is a further reason to wait.

This page stays here for reference. We will review it when the advice changes and the parks reopen. If you would like to see gorillas, our Uganda and Rwanda gorilla safaris are open and well established, and we are happy to help you choose one.

For reference, eastern DR Congo is one of the great wildlife regions of Africa. The Virunga Mountains hold mountain gorillas and the Nyiragongo volcano, whose crater contains one of the world's largest lava lakes. Kahuzi-Biega protects Grauer's gorilla, the largest of all the gorillas, and the Congo forests beyond are among the least explored on earth. Lake Kivu links Goma and Bukavu with Rwanda. Visits depend entirely on security, so we plan nothing here until the parks reopen and government advice allows.
