The Uwera way

Our story

Uwera Travels was born from a simple belief: a safari should give you more than beautiful photographs. It should bring you closer to wild places, local people, conservation work and the stories that make Africa worth protecting.

Private safaris only

Based in Africa

Eleven countries, one team

Honest advice, always

It all started in 2026

A promise about how we travel

The name Uwera carries an idea of beauty, grace and place. For us it is not a label placed on a safari company. It is a promise about how we want to travel, and how we want our guests to feel when they return home.

We design private and tailor-made safaris around gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, wildlife, landscapes, culture, food, walking, conservation and quiet moments in the wild. Our work begins with listening: why you are travelling, what matters to you, how you like to move through a country and what you hope to remember.

We began with Uganda and Rwanda, and today we plan safaris across eleven African countries, from the gorilla forests of the Albertine Rift to the Okavango and the Cape.

Uwera is young. Our purpose is long term.

“Africa should never be reduced to a checklist of animals or attractions. A gorilla encounter is also a story about forests, rangers, trackers and neighbouring communities.”

What we believe

The journey so far

Built on trust, one safari at a time

Uwera begins in 2026, but the knowledge behind it does not. The people building Uwera bring years of experience in guiding, safari planning, conservation, destination management and guest care. The first chapter is not about how many vehicles we run or how many trips we sell. It is about building trust.

With our guests

Trust comes from honest advice, clear communication and attention to detail.

With our guides

Trust comes from respect for their knowledge and their professional contribution.

With conservation partners

Trust comes from showing up consistently and respecting the work already being done.

With communities

Trust comes from listening before making promises.

Our early years are shaped by one principle: grow carefully enough that the quality of the journey, and the quality of our relationships, grow with us.

A vision for the future

Three things we want to be known for

Our vision is to build a leading African travel company where exceptional journeys help protect the places that make them possible.

01

Deeply personal safari design

Every itinerary should feel considered rather than assembled. Travel should have a rhythm, with time for wildlife, time for people, time for rest and time for the unexpected.

02

Meaningful connection to place

Meeting people with something real to share, learning about conservation from those who work in it and seeing landscapes beyond the most obvious viewpoints.

03

Measurable positive impact

Impact built into the way we operate rather than a separate charitable activity. We would rather publish a modest, verifiable result than a large claim that cannot be measured.

Our impact model

Travel should create value in more than one direction

A guest pays for a journey, and that payment supports a network of people and places. Our responsibility is to understand that network and make thoughtful decisions about where value goes.

As Uwera grows we will publish impact reviews that are clear about what we fund directly, what we support through partners and what guest travel contributes to more widely.

01

Conservation

Tourism does not create the value of forests, wetlands and savannahs. It depends on value that already exists. Our role is to support the systems that protect them, working with recognised conservation organisations and park authorities where that is appropriate.

02

Communities

Families live beside protected areas and work in tourism. We want more of the value travel creates to stay with them: local suppliers, local professionals and community experiences where the community has agency and a fair share.

03

Culture

Culture is not an optional extra on a safari. We want guests to meet it respectfully, led by people with a real connection to what is being shared, never reduced to entertainment.

04

People

A safari company is only as strong as its team. Guides and field teams should have room to develop their skills, share what they know and build long careers in tourism.

05

Responsible business

A healthy business can employ people, pay suppliers fairly, support partnerships and invest in better practice for the long term. Profit and purpose do not have to compete.

The Uwera family

The people behind the journey

Uwera is a family of people connected by a shared responsibility for the places where we travel: safari designers, guides, drivers, hosts, conservation partners, local suppliers, lodges and our guests. We want guests to feel welcomed into a place, not processed through one.

The ranger who spends long days protecting a forest.

The guide who remembers the name of a bird after hearing it once.

The chef who turns local ingredients into a meal guests talk about for years.

The driver who keeps the journey safe across hundreds of kilometres.

The conservationist who works quietly behind the scenes.

These people are part of the safari. Uwera exists because of them.

Where we are going

Not simply a larger Uwera. A more useful one.

We want to earn trust one safari at a time, build relationships before asking for recognition and measure impact before making large claims. A company that helps guests understand Africa more deeply, creates meaningful work for local people and treats luxury as thoughtful hospitality rather than excess.

Travel with purpose. Return with a deeper connection to Africa.
