Overview

Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s great inland sea, and the best way to see it is from a kayak. Setting out from Karongi, you paddle between green islands and quiet coves with a local guide, stopping to swim and to visit a small island community.

It works beautifully as a rest day between gorilla and chimp treks, or as a day of its own from a lakeside hotel.

Highlights

  • Paddling among the islands of Lake Kivu
  • Swim stops in clear, bilharzia-free water
  • Lunch on the shore at Cormoran Lodge
  • Evening song of the Kivu fishermen
