Akagera is Rwanda’s one savannah park, and in recent years lions and rhinos have returned to it. A game drive in the morning and a boat trip on Lake Ihema in the afternoon give you a real sense of it in a single day.
It is about two and a half hours from Kigali, so you can leave at first light and be back for dinner.

Leave Kigali early and drive east to Akagera National Park for a morning game drive across the savannah. After lunch take the boat trip on Lake Ihema, where hippos and crocodiles share the shore with fish eagles and storks. You drive back to Kigali in the evening.

Pack light, neutral colours for game drives, a warm fleece for early mornings, a sun hat, good sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars are provided in the vehicle, but bring your own if you are a keen birder or photographer.
