Overview

Amboseli is the place to see elephants against the snows of Kilimanjaro. The park is small, flat and open, and its permanent swamps, fed by meltwater running off the mountain, draw elephants, buffalo, hippos and wading birds across the dry plains. In the morning, when the clouds lift, the full bulk of Africa's highest mountain stands over the herds, and photographers rarely forget it.

The elephants are the real stars. The Amboseli population has been studied for more than fifty years and is known for its big tuskers and its strong family bonds. You can watch matriarchs lead their herds to the swamp at Ol Tukai, calves play in the water, and bulls with huge ivory feed quietly in the grass.

Amboseli is a short stop, rewarding in two or three nights, and it sits neatly between Nairobi and Tsavo, or between the Kenyan parks and Tanzania.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: Big elephant herds with Kilimanjaro behind them
  • Pro: Open plains and easy game viewing
  • Pro: The swamps for hippos and waterbirds
  • Pro: Maasai communities that share the land
  • Pro: Two hours by air from Nairobi
  • Con: Dusty in the dry season
  • Con: Kilimanjaro is often hidden by cloud in the middle of the day
  • Con: Less variety of big cats than the Mara

Wildlife

Elephants are the main draw, and the herds are large, relaxed and often close to the vehicle. Buffalo, hippo, plains zebra, Maasai giraffe, wildebeest, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, impala and eland live in the park, with gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx seen in the drier bush. Lions are present and often seen near the swamps, cheetah hunt the open plains, and spotted hyena are common. Leopards are shy, and rhino do not live in the park.

Scenery

Amboseli is flat and open, with the white dry bed of a seasonal lake, patches of acacia, and emerald swamps that glow against the dust. The mountain dominates every view, its snowy summit often hidden by cloud by mid-morning, so we plan an early start for the clearest photographs.

Activities

  • Elephant viewing: morning and afternoon drives to the swamps and the herds
  • Observation Hill: a short walk to a viewpoint over the swamps with Kilimanjaro behind
  • Bird watching: around Ol Tukai, the pans and the seasonal lake
  • Maasai community visit: a cultural stop with the Olgulului people
  • Sunrise photography: an early start to catch Kilimanjaro clear of cloud

Weather and climate

Amboseli is hot and dry, with daytime temperatures of 28°C to 32°C for most of the year and cooler nights from June to September. Rain falls mainly from March to May and in November and December, but it is among the drier of Kenya’s parks.

Approximate long-term averages. Higher ground is cooler, and forests can rain in any month.

Dry season

June to October is the driest and coolest time. The air is clearer, the dust is the main nuisance, and the animals gather at the swamps, which makes them easy to find. Kilimanjaro is most often visible in the early morning and late afternoon, and in these months the cloud is often thinner.

Wet season

The long rains from March to May and the short rains in November and December green the plains, and the seasonal lake can fill. Clouds often cover Kilimanjaro, but they lift for a few hours in the morning, and the park is quiet with lower rates and many migrant birds.

Best time to visit

June to October and January to February are the best months for game viewing and clear views of Kilimanjaro. The elephants are around all year, so the park rewards a visit in any season, but the dust of the late dry season is real and the wet months can hide the mountain more often than not.

How to get there

Amboseli is about 240 kilometres from Nairobi. The drive takes four to five hours on a mostly good road, and the flight from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes to the airstrip. It connects easily with Tsavo West by road, and with Tanzania’s Arusha and Kilimanjaro by the border post at Namanga.

Permits and fees

Park fees are included in our safaris. Visitors need a Kenya eTA arranged online before travel and a passport valid for at least six months. If you are combining with Tanzania, we will explain the separate visa you need there.

Health and safety

The park is hot and dusty, so bring sun protection, a scarf and eye drops. Altitude is mild. Take medical advice about malaria before you travel, and keep a respectful distance from elephants, which can be protective of their calves.
